9" Finished Block
As you can see from the two quilts pictured here, you can get many different layouts using this block. It is a good scrap quilt block. Pick Light, medium and/or dark prints that suggest garden backgrounds. One floral print for the middle square. Use a variety of prints for the best effect.
For Block cut:
1 - 3-1/2" x 3-1/2" square floral print
From light prints:
2 - 2" x 2" squares
4 - 2" x 3-1/2" rectangles
2 - 2" x 5" rectangles
From medium or dark prints:
2 - 2" x 2" squares
4 - 2" x 3-1/2" rectangles
2 - 2" x 5" rectangles
To construct block:
1. Sew one light 2" square to a medium/dark 2" square. Make two sets. Sew to the 3-1/2" floral square making sure the light or the medium fabrics are opposite each other when sewn to the floral square.
2. Sew 2 light print 2" x 3-1/2" rectangles together at their narrow end. Sew 2 medium/dark 2" x 3-1/2" rectangles together at their narrow end. Sew to opposite side of 3-1/2" floral square, light strips to light side, medium/dark strips to medium/dark side.
3. Sew a light 2" x 3-1/2" rectangle to a medium/dark 2" x 3-1/2" rectangle. Make 2 sets. Add these strips to the block, making sure the light rectangles are on the dark side, the dark rectangles are on the light side.
4. Sew 2 light 2" x 5" rectangles together at their narrow end. Repeat with the medium/dark rectangles. Sew these to the block on the remaining long side, light on the dark side, dark on the light side.
5. Sew 2 2" x 3-1/2" light rectangles together. Do the same with 2 medium/dark rectangles. Sew these to each of the remaining sides of the floral block.
Sign and date your block in the seam allowance on the back of your block.
