Nellie Durand has compiled this memorial on Gayle Lowndes. Gail was an active member of Smoky Mountain Quilters before moving to Florida in 2007. She exhibited numerous quilts in our annual quilt show, each of all were prize winners.

Gayle Lowndes, beloved mother and wife, passed away on Sunday, March 2, following a long battle with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL). A memorial service will be held near Knoxville, TN, in late April. Close neighbors and new friends were received at an informal reception held 4:30-6:00 pm in the Lowndes home in Punta Gorda, FL on Tuesday, March 4.
Gayle is survived by her loving husband of 46 years, Doug; her son and daughter-in-law Erik and Celeste Lowndes of Apex, NC; her daughter and son-in-law Katherine and Kevin Hart of Oakton, VA; her mother, Ruby Forsyth, of Houston, TX; brother Larry Forsyth of Dallas, TX; sister Sandra Ellard of Houston, TX; and six grandchildren.
Gayle had a long and active career as a fabric artist including tapestry weaving, woven clothing design (“Designs in Fiber”), and most recently art quilting. She was well known to local artists and craftspersons both in the Knoxville-Oak Ridge, Tennessee area where she lived for 28 years (1979-2007), and near her new home in Punta Gorda (2007-8). She was a member of the Foothills Craft Guild, the Southern Highland Craft Guild, the Smoky Mountain Quilters, and the Peace River Quilters Guild. She also was an active swimmer and a member of Swimmin’ Wimmin’ (Oak Ridge, TN). In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory should be directed to the education fund of the Peace River Quilters Guild (www.peaceriverquilters.org) or of the Smoky Mountain Quilters (www.smokymtnquilters.com).
