This is an open invitation to Southern Quilt Makers, Collectors, Historians
and Friends:
The Southern Quilt Conference, people like you, will
meet at the Downtown Holiday Inn March 14-15, 2008, in Huntsville,
Alabama, to explore their favorite subject -- quilts.
Bets Ramsey, currently being honored as a "Quilt Treasure" by
the Alliance for American Quilts, will be the keynote speaker, reviewing
the Southern Quilt Symposium she conducted at the Hunter Museum of American
Art in Chattanooga from 1974-1992. The Symposium provided a venue for
quilt exhibitions of national scope, lectures about quilts and their
history, and workshops with recognized teachers. In addition, it gave
opportunity to meet and make new quilt friends.
Other features of the conference will include showings of special collections
and quilt studies. The Huntsville Museum of Art will have a private showing
of their Hobbs Quilt, an extraordinarily well documented and preserved
crazy quilt that is part of the permanent collection.
Dale Rhoades will show and discuss an 1880s Signature Quilt that includes
signatures of the day's leaders, presidents, politicians, and literary
giants. Later she will host a wine party at her home, a replica of the
1642 Witches' House in Salem, MA, complete with 17th century furnishings.
Lynn Gorges will display and speak about her collection of palampores.
Alabama historian Frances Robb will discuss quilts as backdrops in 19th
century photos. Merikay Waldvogel and others will be additional speakers,
topics to be announced later.
Pat Kyser is chairman of local arrangements and will receive conference
registration, by Email: patkyser@kiwaay.net, by mail: 1001 Tennessee

Ann Rushing passed along the following information.
Rooster's Quilts (Maryville) owner, Mary Palmer, has a son stationed
in Afghanistan. Shortly after he arrived, several of his men were injured.
She is offering quilt kits to folks who will make the quilts for the
injured soldiers from her son's unit in Afghanistan. She is paying for
the shipping.
In the flag kit she provides a blue rectangle background with one star with fusible attached, and red and white stripes. You make a flag but much simpler than our national flag. It's about 45 x 60.
If you are interested in helping, please contact Mary at 865-980-9118.
