take a workshop

​We try to schedule workshops with teachers and classes that appeal to our members​. ​We invite suggestions and make an effort to offer a variety of workshops for all skill levels. Members are encouraged to experiment with techniques that may be unfamiliar or might be perceived as slightly more difficult than their comfort levels permit. Students are often surprised with their results, and new confidence is achieved.

Tone Haugen-cogburn

This fun class will take place on Saturday, September 28, 2024. Tone will supply all paints, papers for printing on paper, and iron and ironing surfaces. A $25 materials fee will be collected at the workshop. This class will be held at the meeting/event center on the grounds of the Historic Ramsey House, 2614 Thorn Grove Pike, just off John Sevier Hwy. It is a full-day class from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. The cost is $50 for SMQ members and $60 for non-members. ENROLLMENT ENDS September 14.

SMQ Charity Quilt Sewing Sessions are fun for our members. These are wonderful opportunities to get to know each other while sharing what they love to do. These members are working away, sorting fabrics and making up quilt kits to distribute at the next guild meeting for members to take home and assemble.

One of our selected charity projects is the I SPY quilt. We offer directions for blocks in two sizes: 4.5-inch block and 6.5-inch block. Click Fun & Games for some suggestions of themes and questions to engage kids in play with I SPY quilts. Pinterest has some wonderful examples of I SPY quilts if you would like some inspiration.

​charity project kits

Cheer!Quilts come to us in all stages of completion. Some people prefer to do their own from start to finish and then donate the completed quilts. Others like to attend workdays (when gatherings aren't prohibited) to prepare kits for volunteers to choose and complete. The two types of project kits are "piecing kits" and "quilting kits."  

Piecing Kits include:

• Cut & bundled pieces
• Labels, if needed for clarity
• Patterns
• Illustration
• Written Instructions
• Packing List with ID#, Description, and Contents

• Pieced Top
• Backing
• Batting
• Bundled 2.25-inch cut binding or fabric to cut your own
• Packing List with ID#, Contents, and Directions

Some of our members created underwater themed quilts & donated them to East Tennessee Children's Hospital in Knoxville.

The happy nature of the quilts helps relax concerned family members, and often the patients themselves, as they prepare for the expert care that awaits.

Programs are scheduled for each guild meeting. Sometimes we have an invited teacher, or a local shop owner, or perhaps we present round robin tutorials so members can get quick lessons in specific techniques. Trunk shows and quilt history presentations are popular among SMQ members.
